James Woodward & Sons 12 Bore “Automatic” Sidelock – 29” Nitro Steel Barrels - Extra Finish
Description: *** SOLD *** The gun design that catapulted Woodwards into the upper tier of British gunmakers: the under snap action sidelock ejector. The easy-to-operate under snap action opens the action and cocks the hammers at the same time. Woodward number 4205 was made circa 1888 – 89 and has all the Woodward signature features: 29” Whitworth nitro steel barrels, arcaded fences, elaborate and profuse engraving, t-shaped safety button, bulbous cocking indicator, sideclips and the Woodward-style swept back pistol grip. Presented in its oak & leather case with maker’s label and cleaning rod with attachments. Tight on face. With its open chokes and 6lb 12oz weight this double is an upland gunner’s delight. The 29” Whitworth nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding low pressure 2-1/2” shotshells are being imported into the US by ARMUSA and Game Bore and are also available from RST Shells. The barrels are topped by a raised solid gamestyle rib. The rib is inscribed “The Automatic” and “James Woodward & Sons 64 St. James’s Street London SW” and “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid-Pressed Steel”. The bores are shiny and bright and the bluing is in good condition. Note that like many doubles of this era the ejectors have been disconnected by a previous owner but can be reactivated by a new owner if desired. The right barrel is bored 0.737 with a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. The left barrel is bored 0.730 and also has a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.023. An upland gunner’s dream. Woodward was known for the highly figured French walnut he stocked his guns with and this double is a great example. Wonderfully figured with its swept back pistol grip and horn cap known as the “Woodward Hand”. The checkering is crisp and the finish is in overall good condition but could stand a little touch up. There are a few handling marks from normal usage. Stock dimensions are 15-1/4” by 1-3/8” by 1-3/4”. Cast off for the righthand shot. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense.
