Born into a gunmaking family in Haddington, Scotland, he honed his skills under his father's tutelage before advancing his career with prominent firms such as Whitworth in Manchester, Westley Richards in Birmingham, and James Purdey in London. In 1893, Robertson acquired Boss & Co., one of London's oldest gunmakers, and under his leadership, the company introduced several innovations, including the Boss Hammerless Ejector in 1897 and the Boss Over and Under shotgun in 1909. John Dickson In addition to his work with Boss & Co., Robertson produced shotguns under his own name. These firearms were often more affordable boxlock ejector guns, typically crafted in Birmingham and then stocked and finished by Boss & Co. in London. They were intended for customers seeking quality firearms at a lower price point, often for gamekeepers or young shooters. John Robertson was a prominent figure in the London gunmaking scene, particularly known for his association with Boss & Co., one of London's oldest gunmakers established in 1812. Robertson joined Boss & Co. in the late 19th century and became a driving force behind several innovations, including the development of the Boss single trigger and the Boss Over and Under shotgun. Boss Guns : During his tenure, the company's premises were located at 13 Dover Street, London, W. Later, the address changed to 41 Albemarle Street, London, W., where Boss & Co. operated from 1930 to 1960.
