This very handsome Stephen Grant & Son 12 bore sidelock ejector Pair was made in 1893 as Best Quality sidelock ejectors. A remarkable pair, they sport a beautifully figured set of 30” nitro Damascus barrels and come with a new spare set of 28” steel barrels for the No. 1 gun. The engraving is of very highly quality and has the “signature” engraved fluted fences for which Grant is noted. They are stocked in highly figured French walnut. Double triggers, selective ejectors, and auto safety. Nice handling and tight on face. East to carry and shoot for a day afield or at the range. Presented in their oak & leather case with maker’s label, loading data, Grant snap caps, Grant oil bottle, and other accessories. Weight 6lb 5oz.
The 30” highly figured nitro Damascus barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding low pressure 2-1/2” shotshells are readily available in the US from Clays Ammo, Game Bore and RST Shells. No.1: the right barrel is bored 0.733 with a constriction of .005 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.023. The left barrel is bored 0.734 and has a constriction of 0.020 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.022. No.2: The right barrel is bored 0.735 with a constriction of 0.005 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left barrel is also bored 0.735 and has a constriction of 0.025 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. A separate set of 28” nitro steel barrels with 2-3/4” chambers were made for the No. 1 gun. Extra Set: The right barrel is bore 0.730 with a constriction of 0.008 for a Light Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left barrel is also bored 0.730 and has a constriction of 0.018 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.029.
This very special pair was stocked in very handsome set of French walnut stocks and forearms. Originally stocked to a short length of pull they have been professionally lengthened by Atkin, Grant & Lang at their workshops in the UK. Stock dimensions are 15” by 1-1/2” by 2”. Cast off 1/8 inch for the righthanded shot.
This really is a remarkable pair deserving of your attention with its gorgeous 30” nitro Damascus barrels, beautifully figured French walnut stock, sharp engraving and original oak & leather case with maker’s label and accessories. The pair are in solid mechanical condition and tight on face. They do have some cosmetic blemishes that the new owner may want to address. But the pair have “good bones” and are worth a little more refurbishment to make them really “sparkle”.
