Stephen Grant 16 Bore Back Action Hammergun with 29-1/2” Nitro Steel 2-3/4” Barrels and Sidelever Opening – No. 3 of a Trio
Description: Handsome and rare Stephen Grant 16 bore sidelever hammergun that is the No. 3 gun of a trio. Trios are rare enough but in 16 bore very rare indeed! Great handling hammergun with rebounding hammers and sidelever opening which allows the gunner to open the action with the hammers cocked. Grant number 5560 was made in 1885. It has peninsula back action locks, extractors, unsprung strikers, and is chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells. Presented in its oak & leather case with maker’s label and two-piece wooden cleaning rod with tool heads. Weighs 6lb 7oz. The 29-1/2” nitro steel barrels were sleeved in the US by Kirk Merrington, an English barrel maker, who operates out of Kerrville, Texas. They are chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells and are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib. The bores are shiny and bright and the bluing is in very good condition. The right barrel is bored 0.670 with a constriction of 0.007 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.039. The left barrel is also bored 0.670 and has a constriction of 0.012 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.037. The nicely figured straight hand stock, possibly an historic re-stock, has been professionally refinished and has crisp checkering. The forearm has the convenient Anson forearm release and has also been refinished with refreshed checkering. Both exhibit some minor handling marks from normal usage. Stock dimensions are 14-1/8” to a checkered butt with heel and toe plates by 1-5/8” by 2-1/8”. Cast off for the right-handed shooter. Sixteen bore British hammerguns are pretty scarce and hard to come by. This is a great handling hammer double made in the legendary “Queen of the Uplands” boring. Easy to operate with sidelever opening and 2-3/4” chambers. Bird season is just around the corner. Better not let this one get away. *** NOTE: The photographs are part of the description.
