Thomas Woodward 12 Bore Sidelock with 30” Highly Figured Nitro Damascus Barrels – 2-3/4”
Description:
Handsome, nice handling and svelte 12 bore Thomas Woodward sidelock non-ejector with easy-to-operate snap action push forward underlever that cock the locks with ease. The action body is beautifully rounded to produce a graceful slightly tapered shape that is very pleasing to the eye and the hand. Thomas Woodward built guns until the early 1890’s when he left to become manager of the Holland & Holland factory! An adaptation of the James Woodward “Automatic” this double has top strap mounted cocking indicators, roll forward manual safety, double triggers, and extractors. Also has highly figured French walnut stock and forearm and a “T.Woodward” name in a scrolling banner on the sideplates. Thomas Woodward serial number 7137 was made circa 1878-80 and is easy to carry for a day afield at 6lb 4oz.
The highly figured and recently re-browned 30” nitro Damascus are chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave rib on which is inscribed “T Woodward Express Gun Works Birm”. The bores are shiny and bright. The right barrel is bored 0.735 and has a constriction of 0.014 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. The left barrel is bored 0.737 and has a constriction of 0.018 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028.
The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured French walnut with a matte handrubbed oil finish. It has lightly engraved heel and toe plates on a checkered butt. There are some handling marks on the stock from normal usage and the checkering shows some wear in several places all of which can be easily touched up by a gunsmith. Stock dimensions are 14-1/4” by 1-1/2” by 2”. Cast off slightly for the righthanded shooter.
This special little double is a great example of where aesthetics and functionality blend together to produce an exquisite tool for the shooting man. Along with physical beauty come easy-to-see cocking indicators, roll forward manual safety, easy to operate push-forward underlever, and great handling.
