W.B. Barratt Bar-in-Wood 12-Gauge Game Gun in High Original Condition, 30” Nitro-Proofed Damascus Barrels
Description: This British best-quality 12-gauge bar-in-wood game gun, which was manufactured circa 1880 by W.B. Barratt in the town of Burton-on-Trent near Birmingham, is in high original condition. The engraving is extensive and crisp, with a patina expected for a well-maintained gun of this period. The 30” fine-Damascus barrels were nitro-proofed at some later date. The right barrel is choked skeet (.005) and the left light modified (.018). The bores are in excellent condition and have no signs of pitting or other flaws. The browned Damascus barrels are beautiful, exhibiting the depth found on high-quality British barrels. The well-figured English walnut stock is in excellent condition with some handling marks below the receiver. The wood behind the sidelocks and under the tang is solid. The locks are finely machined, and the hammers are rebounding. Both triggers pull at 5-1/2 pounds. The gun weighs just 6 pounds 10 ounces. The barrels are chambered at 2-5/8”. The bore diameters 9” from the breech are .738 for the right barrel and .745 for the left; outside diameters at the muzzle are .800 and .795, respectively. Wall thicknesses of the right barrel at 9” from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) .031/.028/.025 and at the middle of the barrel are .033/.030./.026. Wall thickness for the left barrel are .030/.029/.028 and .035/.032/.032, respectively. Drop at the comb is 1-5/8” and at the heel is 2-5/8”. Length of pull is 14-1/4” to the end of the original horn buttplate. Cast is neutral. The gun locks up tight. All serial numbers, 5140, match. The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired on the range on a number of occasions using shells manufactured by RST Corporation designed for use in Damascus-barreled shotguns. However, as for any antique shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing, and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed. The gun carries a 30-day warranty, during which Doublegun Preservation, LLC will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and all shipping costs.
