J. Nicklas, Riga; Ornate 12ga. Shotgun
Description: J.Nicklas of Riga, Latvia, maker: ornate engraved, gold-inlayed and carved hammer 12ga double; SN2650. Johann Nicklas was a German-born gunsmith who established a business in Old Riga in 1875 (Old Riga was destroyed during WWII). He made beautiful guns in the German-best tradition under his name and guns that were signed by him for the famous German maker J.P. Sauer and Sohn. This 12 ga. is representative of his best work and includes deep full-coverage engraving with gold inlays and nicely figured carved wood. The 30" barrels, which are also gold-inlaid, are marked Krupp Flussstahl (mild steel) with 90%+ of the original and exceptional quality rust blue. They are choked 0.707"R (modified) and 0.692"L (full) and chambers are 2.5". There is minor shallow pitting in the bores but they are shiny and smooth for the most part and still robust with wall thicknesses at the mauzzle of 0.048R and 0.050L. The barrels and the action exhibit German proof marks. Other features include triple lock-up, which is vault-tight with Greener-style cross-bolt, sidelocks with fine lockwork and rebounding hammers, pistol grip with intricately engraved steel grip-cap, checkered horn buttplate, 14" pull and 1.5" drop at the heel. The top of the heel has a scrape and the buttplate has two drops of paint and is locally rough along its right side (see photos). The gun is in fine condition overall and representative of the best in the Germanic gunmaking traditions of the time. It is remarkably light weight and handles like an upland game gun. Antique, $50 shipping. SALE PENDING SOLD Antique: Yes Shotgun Gauge: 12 Gauge |
