Hammerless Sidelocks - This along with our number 3967 is a fabulous pair of Shotguns. Quality of a Boss, Purdey, or Holland Royal’s this pair is a joy to hold , fondle, and at a price much less than what the others would certainly cost you. BEST quality features include chopperlump barrels, double seared locks, bushed firing pins, and articulated front triggers.
Featured in what I believe to be their original retailer’s trunk case these guns are in outstanding condition. The weight and choking combined with their original 2 3/4" chambering make these guns an excellent choice for sporting clays or the hard dying Montana, Dakota\'s and eastern Oregon ringnecks.
Our wonderful client and French gun expert Martin provided us the following information on Chapu:
Auguste Chapu was located at 5 Avenue de la Grande Armée, Paris from at least 1895 and likely to the 1930s.
He was a retailer of high end shotguns and was involved in providing guns and ammunition to the pigeon competitors in the Bois de Boulogne, not far from his shop. Consolidation happened first with Lien-Chapu, then Callens bought that concern which became Lien-Chapu-Callens (1933) which in turn became Callens et Modé until the early 1990s.
The Avenue de la Grande Armée shop stayed in all those changes as it is a prestigious location, in close proximity to the Arch of Triumph.
Celestin Modé was a true entrepreneur in the business and had bought by the 1920s most of the Parisian second tier retailers and makers, such as Pirlet, Lefaucheux, Rieger, Rochatte, Beringer, Nouvelle, etc. His address was 91, rue de Richelieu.
To be clear the price is for the pair, both guns in their excellent case. *** Note: To see this gun with high resolution photos and a zoom-in feature, go to the vintagedoubles main site and search for the gun ID: 3980 or browse the main site to see our full gun collection.
