We offer you a “SCARCE” Gastinne Renette (Paris) Top Lever 16 gauge Double Pinfire Shotgun manufactured in 1865. Louis-Julien Gastinne-Renette (1812-1885) was one of the leading Parisian gun makers in the mid-19th century and was the gun maker of Emperor Napoleon III and the king of Spain. He took over the shop of his father-in-law in 1840, and won numerous awards at French national as well as international exhibitions of the time. The shop and the shooting gallery of Gastine-Renette was the meeting point of all influential VIP’s in the country. Top lever pin fire shotguns by Gastinne Renette are very rare and scarcely seen. This one was refinished long ago and is in excellent condition as you can see. It wears 29 3/8 inch barrels with excellent bores. The damasks pattern is very vivid and well defined. The rib is marked “Gastinne Renette arq. de l'Empereur a Paris. Brevet Westley Richards". Brevet Westley Richards is French for "Westley Richards patented". Each barrel at the chamber is marked with an intertwined "EP" which is a Paris proof house marking. The bottom of each barrel is marked with a “Crown over GR” which was Gastinne Renette’s own cartouche. The other marks are a “WR” on the barrels flats which was the Westley Richards connection for their patented top lever locking system. The left barrel is also marked with the year of manufacture “1865”, with the right barrel showing the serial number of “2392”. The length of pull is 14 1/8 over the original butt plate. The metal shows fine and delicate engraving as you can see. The hammers are original and are also engraved. Each plate has the name “Gastinne Renette” engraved onto it as shown. The wood is in excellent condition with no signs of cracks, chips or repairs and is highly figured. The forearm design shows two very small wood plugs of which one is missing as shown. The original sling swivel under the barrel and in the butt stock has been removed. No alterations were done to the shotgun for this, they were just removed. The action is tight with no issues and both hammers function as they should. This will be shipped fully insured UPS Ground to you where allowed for $75.
