HAMMER GUN Made c. 1870s-80 in LEIPZIG, GERMANY
Description: ENGRAVED & GOLD INLAID Antique German MORITZ Double Barrel SxS Shotgun 16g HAMMER GUN Made c. 1870s-80 in LEIPZIG, GERMANY Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Factory Engraved and Gold Inlaid Moritz Double Barrel Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, made circa the mid-1870s to the late 1880s in Leipzig, Germany. The Moritz family has a long history of gunmaking dating back to the 17th Century. The earliest gunmaking Moritz was Heinrich of Kassel in Hesse, Germany. He lived from 1615 to 1668 and was the great, great, great grandfather of Johann Daniel (J.D.) Moritz who was born on January 17, 1776, in Zella St. Blasii and died on December 19, 1855. J.D. Moritz was a Journeyman Gunmaker in 1805 and founded his own business in 1813. His second son, Friedrich Wilhelm Moritz carried on his father’s business after he passed away in 1855. The overall condition is very good. The Damascus pattern barrels show a mixed gray and brown patina. Stock and forend are fine and show light wear. Deep checkering on the forend and wrist. The engravings are crisp. The action is excellent with a mended right hammer spur. The smooth bores are mostly bright with slight frosting at the breech. Absent front sling swivel. The right side of the horn pistol grip has a thin repaired crack. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30-7/8 inches. Drop to comb: 1 ½” Drop to heel: 2 ¼” Caliber: 16 Gauge Chambers: 2-1/2 inches with extractor. Chokes: Cylinder/Improved Cylinder LOP: 14-1/8 inches. Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast.
