Winchester Model 21 SxS custom 12 gauge two pair of barrels, custom wood. Custom case Galco
Description:
WINCHESTER 21 S X S SHOTGUN 12GA WITH GALCO CASE, CUSTOM STOCK AND FACTORY LETTER. #14339
HISTORY OF THE WINCHESTER 21 SHOTGUN
The Winchester Model 21 is a deluxe grade side by side (S x S) shotgun. The shotgun's initial production ran from 1931 through 1960 and yielded approximately 30,000 guns. Winchester Arms ceased the main production line of this shotgun in 1960 and the Model 21 was sourced to the Winchester Custom Shop until the gun's retirement in 1991. New Winchester Model 21 production continues under license to Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Company.
The Winchester Model 21 action is a typical breach loader shotgun, commonly called a break or hinge action. Like all quality double guns, production is time-consuming due to the laborious process of joining the barrels to produce an identical convergence of shot. The Model 21 was Winchester's effort to make a quality side by side shotgun to rival those of high-end makers such as Parker and Fox. Financial troubles plagued the gun's development until the Western Cartridge Company purchased Winchester Repeating Arms in 1931. The Model 21 has a considerable collector following as it is regarded as almost a custom-made shotgun. **
Types Produced from 1931 to 1959
Model 21 grades at this time were chambered in 12, 16 and 20 gauge. A .410 bore was offered in Custom Grade only and is extremely rare, only exceeded by the rare (8 known) 28 gauge guns produced. Barrel lengths were offered from 26 inches to 32 inches. The undersides of the trigger plates were typically stamped with the name of the grade, as this one is, “Dr. John Littig."
This Winchester 21 serial # 14339 12 gauge
The replacement stock is high grade Walnut with a custom leather butt plate. This work would be $5500.00 if done today (January 2020).
The work was done by *Paul D. Hillmer of Iowa. He and his wife are still are doing only customer work on shotguns (especially for completion shooters) even today.
THE GALCO DELUXE CUSTOM LOCKING CASE
A GALCO Deluxe Field bag costs $600, in today's market.
This custom locking case with initials “RWL” and customer labeling inside (Winchester 21 with Company Logo etc.) would be more, much more to replace. Likely would cost $1000.00+. These cases are no longer made.
The case includes the following:
Small leather pouch with cleaning jags and brushes
Two "snap caps" made out of ebony wood and brass
Two-part cleaning rod made out of ebony wood and brass
Two barrels, one for trap and one for skeet.
This shotgun, a Winchester 21, has a factory letter and a custom “build invoice” from Winchester, that states the gun was made in 1946 and returned for more custom work ("Repair ") for Dr. John Littig M.D. in 1947. Note his name is engraved on the trigger guard.
The shotgun has been used but shows very little wear. Later there was additional custom work done by Mr. Paul D. Hillmer (*see above). Look at photos for choke— 2 pair of barrels!
