Winchester Model 21 "Salesman's Sample" 20 ga. from 1933
Description: Please note: The factory letter is the last picture. It gives the specifications of the gun in its entirity. The gun specifications are "Spot On'" with the factory letter. The only difference is the barrels on the gun have the IC/Mod chokes. The barrels are totally Winchester, the markings and stampings are all totally correct for the vintage of this particular Model 21. I am 100% sure that Winchester put the barrels on this gun at the factory. I questioned Jessi Bennett at Cody--she said the records stated that it was a Winchester SK-1, SK-2 set of barrels on the gun. I am inclined to think that they might have made a mistake in the ledger book. Errors were made in recording information. If you don't think that this did occur, just take a look at "The Parker Story" and see all the discrepancies and misinformation in the ledgers there. I ran out of pictures, but checked underneath the trigger guard, and the serial number, 4373, is stamped in the wood right where it is supposed to be. This is a very special Winchester Model 21, 20 ga. shotgun. It is recorded in the Cody Letter as having being shipped expressly for use as a "Salesman's Sample" by Winchester in 1933. While most of the Model 21's were sold to individuals, this one was used my Winchester for demonstration purposes. I have the Cody Letter for the gun. Interestingly, today the gun carries 26" barrels factory choked I/M, but they match perfectly to the gun, are numbered to the gun, are totally original in markings for this period, and I am certain that Winchester put a second set of barrels on the gun. Cody didn't have this information, but informed me that the gun could have been sent back for the IC/M barrels. I even send Cody pictures of the barrel markings, flats, etc. and they acknowledged their accurary. I can provide copies of these emails with the sale of the gun. It was not uncommon for Model 21's to be returned to the factory for barrels--either to change the existing barrels or add an extra set. I also contacted Paulene Muerrle, who has some of the records for Model 21's that were sent back to the factory, but, of course, not all of them. She did not have any records for this particular gun. Inspection Started, July 18, 1933 Inspection Finished, July 21, 1933 No Butt Plate, Wood checkered, Beavertail forearm Trap finish, Trap Grade Wood Pitch, 1", Pull 14", Drop at Heel, 2", Drop at Comb, 1 1/2" Weight: 6 lbs., 7 oz. Negatives of the gun: There is a small chip of wood out at the front of the beavertail forearm (I have taken two pictures of this). The gun has the standard middle white bead, and front Bradley front red bead sight. The front Bradley red bead sight has just a slight bit of the red plastic element missing. I called Bradley and they don't sell the red plastic bead to replace on this gun. The fellow told me that they have the red bead sights available.. So, you can buy the new sight if needed. Bradley has several different sizes (diameters) for the red bead sight that they currently offer. I would think that you just remove the existing sight, determine the diameter of the shaft, and then get a new one. Plusses of the gun: Original stock, uncut, with the checkered butt plate. Bores are shiny, and look great. Mechanically the gun seems fine. Nice piece of wood in the gun. Non-Automatic Safety These early Model 21's in 20 ga. are very hard to find. Especially a 1933 gun. Even with just the wood re-done and the checkering re-cut, the gun would be great. I personally would re-do the wood, and then possibly see how it looks as such. The metal has blue wear on the floorplate and trigger guard tang, but this serves to give it an "original" look. The gun everyone wants: Straight-grip stock with a Beavertail Forearm. This is an 88 year old gun that will last another 88 years (probably more). You are undoubtedly familiar with the famous Winchester "Proof" test wherein they fired high-pressure loads from all the double manufacturers of the period. All the others suffered damage, but the 21 fired 2000 of the high pressure rounds and was not damaged. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 21 Serial Number: 4373 Bore: 20 ga.
