LC Smith Specialty Grade 12-Gauge Double-Barrel Trap Gun, 32-inch Barrels, Beavertail Forearm, Original Case Color, Mfg. 1922
Description: This stunning LC Smith 12-gauge Specialty Grade Double Barrel Trap Gun was manufactured in 1922. It has 32-inch barrels, a beautifully figured walnut stock with a straight grip, beavertail forend, pristine engraving, and substantial original case color. The gun has automatic ejectors and a Hunter One-Trigger. The Double Barrel Trap Gun was first offered in 1920. According to Houchins (L.C. Smith: The Legend Lives, p. 279) double barrel trap guns were priced 10-15% higher than a standard double of the same grade, “due to better quality wood and the additional attention paid to the barrel boring operations to ensure consistent pattern… The stocks were also straighter with less drop at the comb and heal.” Except for the irregular use of the letter T on the water table, the “only real way to identify the double barrel trap gun … is from the typical trap configurations associated with the special feature that trap shooters all seem to like. Therefore, it is impossible to determine the exact number of L.C. Smith boule barre trap guns sold during the period of 1920-1940.” The 32” barrels are both choked full (.035) and have 2-3/4-inch chambers. The bore diameters at 9 inches from the breech are both .727. The wall thicknesses (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle are .030/.025/.022 and at the middle of the barrel are .031/.031/.027. The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .031/.025/.031 and .031/.027/.035, respectively. The right barrel wall thickness on the bottom at 7 inches from the muzzle drops to .020, most likely because of the repair of a dent or pitting at some point in the gun’s history. The bores are mirror-like. The bluing, which was redone at some point, is rubbed on both sides where the beavertail forend wood fits against the barrels. The drop at the comb is 1-5/8” and at the heel 2-3/8”. Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of a period Red Head pad is 14-1/2”. Cast is neutral. The gun weighs 8 pounds 4 ounces. The ejectors and Hunter One Trigger function properly. The gun locks up tight and is on face; the top lever returns to the right of center. All serial numbers, RE 47861, match. The price does not include shipping cost, which is paid by buyer. The inspection period is 10 days from receipt. The gun has been fired using standard factory 2-3/4” target loads on many occasions. However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her gunsmith before firing.
