G. E. Lewis 20 BORE - ORIGINAL NITRO PROVED 28" DAMASCUS - IN 2001 LONDON PROVED - COMPLETE RESTORATION in LONDON - TRUNK CASE - SOLID WOOD - EJECTOR
Description: #10911, G. E. (George Edward) Lewis, A 20 Bore Made in 1903 with Nitro Proved Damascus Barrels, The Barrels were Original Nitro Proof in 1903 and then Modern Nitro Proved in London in 2001 to 2 3/4" at 950 BAR, 28" Ejector Damascus Barrels at .673 .018 & .027" (Imp.Mod. & Full), 2 3/4" chambers, Wall Thickness on the Right barrel at .026" and the Left barrel at .030", The 28" barrels have Ejectors with a rib extension plus a third bite (Treble Grip), They are Dovetail Lump Barrels, The versatile Anson & Deeley action, Double triggers, Splinter forend with a Deeley & Edge bottom forend, Straight hand stock at 15 1/4 x 1 5/8 x 2 5/16" over a 1" leather pad with plugs for removal, Cast-Off for the right hand, Excellent Game Gun weight of 5 lbs. 14 oz., Very nice piece of wood, 55% engraving coverage, This piece was completely redone in London, most likely by Ron Solari and then imported to the U. S. by Cyril Adams in Houston. They worked closely together and Cyril brought a lot of English guns to our shores, No case colors remain, Barrel brown at 100%, The wood remains at 98-99%, The checkering is at 100%, The bores have been opened and now remain in absolute excellent condition, The barrels outside are excellent plus, It is tight on the face with excellent bite left. The whole is cased in a leather cornered Canvas trunk with cleaning gear and a trade label. This is an honest and nice handling early Pre-War British boxlock that now is in excellent condition. This piece has a lot of life left in it. The rib is engraved " The Gun Of The Period G. E. Lewis 32 & 33 Lower Loveday St. Birmingham". G. E. Lewis was started in 1850 and was still operating as the G. E. Lewis firm until April of 1996. They had a trademark gun called the "Gun of the Period". Mr. Lewis had 2 sons that later ran the business. They in turn had sons and another George Lewis was appointed a Guardian of the Birmingham Proof House in 1951. In 1988 John Harris, an expert stocker, acquired the business and in 2003 Holts sold the business as a going concern. The firm was again sold at in 2009. From about 1880 to 1914 Lewis made guns were imported into the United States by Von Lengerke & Detmold of New York City.
