Stephen Grant & Sons Bar Action Hammer Pigeon Gun with Sidelever and 31” Barrels – Excellent and Cased
Description: *** SOLD *** One of the most handsome guns I have ever had the pleasure to accept into inventory. Stephen Grant & Sons was a top tier maker at the end of the nineteenth century and was known for the high quality of his guns, especially pigeon guns which were constant winners in the rings. This particular Grant, no. 5927, was made 1888-1889 and has been expertly refurbished recently in the UK by Ron Johnson and Graham MacKinlay. Crisp, ornate engraving; low rebounding hammers that sit below the shooter’s line of sight when cocked; 31” barrels; nicely figured French walnut; and sidelever opening make this a special gun. Cased in a period case with maker’s label, charge card and full accessories including maker’s snap caps and oil bottle, cleaning rod with tools, Bisley leather handguard, and leather case straps. Weighs 7lb 4oz. *** The 31” nitro steel barrels have extractors and were sleeved by Ron Johnson, the highly respected UK barrel maker, and are chambered and proofed for 2-3/4” shotshells. They are topped by a raised, solid concave game style rib. The rib is inscribed “Stephen Grant & Sons. 67A St. James’s Street. London”. The bluing is 99% and has a deep blue lustre. The right barrel is bored 0.729 with a constriction of 0.037 for Improved Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.034. The left barrel is bored 0.726 and has a constriction of 0.044 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033. Tight chokes indeed but this allows the purchaser to have the chokes opened up to meet his particular requirements. *** The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured French walnut. Checkering is crisp and the finish is excellent. The stock dimensions are 15-3/16” including a 1-1/8” leather pad by 1-1/2” by 2”. Cast off for the righthand shot. *** This is a very special gun – ideal for game and clays. It is very nicely balanced and handles like a dream. The engraving is spectacular and its 31” barrels and sidelever opening make it a very desirable English double. Guns like this do not become available very often. Better move quickly! *** Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense. The purchaser will be very pleased with the condition of this gun. SOLD Antique: Yes |
