The shotgun built in 1876 was a box lock action, a relatively new concept at the time. While the Anson & Deeley box lock design—developed in 1875 by two Westley Richards employees—was still in its infancy, it revolutionized break-action shotguns by housing the firing mechanism within the body (or “box”) of the action, instead of external hammers. This design offered cleaner lines, improved reliability, and easier maintenance. This 1876 Westley Richards shotgun would have been among the early adopters of this now-classic box lock system. Typically chambered for black powder shells and featuring fine English walnut stocks, fine engraving, and robust Damascus barrels, these guns were built to endure and perform in the field or at the estate shoot. The 1876 box lock model remains a historically significant piece, representing a critical evolution in sporting arms and the beginning of one of the most enduring shotgun action designs in history. Collectors prize these early models today not just for their craftsmanship, but for their place at the crossroads of tradition and innovation in British gun making.
