Westley Richards stands among the most important names in British gunmaking, and this handsome sidelock ejector demonstrates why. Completed in 1967, serial number 19187 combines traditional Birmingham craftsmanship with an unusually versatile two-barrel configuration, exceptional Turkish walnut, and remarkably light game-gun handling. At just 6 lbs. 6 oz., and balanced 1/8” forward of the pin this Westley Richards was built to be carried and shot.
The two sets of barrels give the gun distinct personalities. The 26-inch barrels are choked Improved Cylinder and Modified, providing the versatility expected of a traditional British game gun. The lively 25-inch barrels are choked Skeet and Skeet, creating an exceptionally quick-handling combination for close-cover upland shooting or an afternoon at the skeet field. Both sets have mirror bores, 2 3/4-inch chambers, tight ribs, strong wall measurements, and retain 99% factory blue. The chambers and barrels remain in proof.
The hand-detachable sidelock action retains excellent factory case coloring, with crisp, restrained engraving that remains clear throughout. Equipped with Westley Richards’ assisted-opening system, the action remains tight with the top lever slightly left of center. The engraved trigger guard retains its factory blue, the screws remain excellent, the ejectors are properly timed with both barrel sets, and the double triggers are crisp.
Complimenting the fine metalwork the Turkish walnut stock commands attention. Rich color and dramatic figure move through the straight-grip stock and beavertail forend, changing character as the gun is viewed from different angles. Precise wood-to-metal fit, fine double-bordered checkering, carved teardrops behind the lockplates, and a neatly checkered butt complete a stock that is both striking and distinctly British. Only light handling marks are present, entirely appropriate for a sporting gun that has been carefully enjoyed and preserved.
With its long 14 5/8-inch length of pull, practical dimensions, two purposefully different barrel sets, and exceptionally light weight, this Westley Richards offers far more than rarity or visual appeal. It is a sophisticated and highly adaptable British sidelock—equally at home pursuing grouse over dogs, shooting driven birds, or turning heads at the sporting club. This two-barrel set is complete with a leather case and accessories. All in all, an attractive and versatile ensemble from one of Birmingham’s great makers.
