Winchester Model 21 20 gauge..game scene engraved and gold inlaid by Master Bill Mains
Description:
Winchester Model 21 SKEET SxS shotgun. 20 gauge, 26" solid rib barrels choked WS1 & WS2 or as I refer to it: Bird 1 & Bird 2 since that choke configuration has proven ideal for upland bird hunting!
As you saw in the photos this is a very special Model 21 as it was profusely and expertly engraved by none other than Bill Mains. If you do not recognize the name, Bill Mains was a well-known master gun engraver until his passing in 2012. Bill was the factory engraver for Colt from 1967 - 1972 and is attributed to having engraved more 2nd generation Colt Single Action Army revolvers than any other engraver! His signature on those SAA's was a stamped buffalo under the cylinder pin. Why a buffalo? He was working out of Buffalo, NY at the time. He was also well know as the engraver of Ithaca "E" single barrel trap guns for the last seven years of their production.
After that he lived in Las Vegas and engraved guns for many famous entertainment and sports celebrities.
The engraving on this 21 is of gold inlaid woodcocks on each side in a very interesting gold wire vignette; a gold inlaid pointing dog on the bottom and a gold inlaid grouse on the trigger guard with both being defined by a similar gold wire border. The rest of the receiver and chamber area of the barrels is covered in a distinctive patter of oak leaves. All of Mr. Main's engraving makes this a one-of-a-kind, bespoke Model 21.
The SKEET grade pistol grip stock has a 13 7/8" LOP to the checkered butt; 1 1/2" DAC and 2 3/8" DAH with neutral cast. The matching beavertail forearm is from a rather unique piece of Walnut in as much as the back half of the forearm is inherently very dark!
The gun weighs 6lbs. 8oz.
The gun has been used, hunted with and showing small signs of use. On very close inspection you will see a small repair on the bottom, left, front corner of the stock along with some finish flakes so I will grade the wood at 95%. The metal looks quite good at first, then with the aid of a strong light you can see some very faint surface blemishes just ahead of the engraving on the left side of the barrels; grade: 95-97%.
