Winchester Model 1897 Riot Shotgun
Description: Offered is a Winchester Model 1897, 12 ga. riot shotgun with a twenty inch barrel. This great old scattergun is in excellent mechanical condition, with a good bore, bore has a few blemishes and dark spots but is still very serviceable. The gun retains most of the original finish which has turned brown over the years and there are spots of freckling and light pitting, the forearm is very good with no cracks or chips, there is a small shallow hairline crack at the left side of the grip which I have shown in my pictures. The wood on the stock has several dings and as you can see at the upper and lower edges there are several dings and notches. The buttplate is original to this gun but although it is well worn it has no cracks or chips. As you can see in my pictures someone has put a wrench on the barrel just in front of the receiver at some time marking the metal; probably thought this was a takedown model, which it is not. The barrel is stamped “cyl” which is consistent with riot and trench guns, also the bead front sight is missing. Due to the markings on the left side of the receiver of “D & P” and the stamp “2” on the right side I am lead to believe that this gun was probably the property of a police department or prison at some time. All in all this an honest old riot shotgun manufactured in 1908 and still a good shooting old shotgun. As you probably know these original riot and trench guns are becoming harder and harder to come by, most that I see these days have been cut down and will have a barrel stamping of “Full” or “Modified”.
