ALMOST NEVER SEEN, WINCHESTER'S FIRST PUMP SHOTGUN, MODEL 1893 12 GA., #25XXX, MADE 1896
Description: ALMOST NEVER SEEN, WINCHESTER'S FIRST PUMP SHOTGUN, MODEL 1893 12 GA., #25XXX, MADE 1896! This was Jonathan Brownings initial design that a few years later was improved into the Model 1897 that was made well into the 1950s. The 1893 was made for the 2 5/8" black powder shells of the day and is easily identified by the cut out in the ejection port on the right side of the receiver- the Model 1897 has a straight rectangular cut out without the open area over the top of the receiver of the 1893. The Model 1893s rarely turn up these days and when they do are almost universally in very poor and frequently damaged condition. Finding one with any blue is a rarity indeed and just finding one that is unaltered with solid wood is remarkable. This example retains the original smooth steel butt plate and the wood to metal fit is tight with only a hint or a stress crack coming back from the receiver in a couple of places- these cracks usually end up with chipping etc as the stock is held to the receiver with a long cross bolt running from the butt plate through the stock to the receiver. Like on Savage 1899s with the same arrangement, as the wood swells and shrinks with temperature and humidity changes, the stock pressure against the receiver can change causing these little cracks to form. Excellent forearm, overall metal on barrel, mag tube and barrel is an uncleaned very aged blue to plum/brown with some gray mixing. Excellent early markings. The action is tight and the bore shows usual black powder corrosion/light pitting, but still decent. An historic 126 year old example of Winchester's first pump shotgun!
