Unusual Winchester Model 40
Description:
This s Winchester's second attempt at making a semiautomatic shotgun. It was well made but poorly designed. It was produced for only two years until WWII and Winchester's embarrassed recall ended production. Most accounts say "design flaws" doomed it; little information is out there regarding those flaws, except that it would occasionally fire before the bolt was fully closed. Of 18,929 made, all were 12 ga. Most were recalled and apparently destroyed. A handful (267 says one source) were skeet models with checkered wood and Cutts Compensators. Rest had plain wood and plain barrels. This unusual specimen has 28" modified barrel and nice skeet wood. LOP is 14 1/4" over Winchester pad and 1/2" spacer. Wood is nice with a few handling marks. Metal about 94%, with a rub at rear top of receiver and small freckle above trigger. A great condition rare gun for a Winchester collector. Shipping $40.
