Winchester ~ Model 21 ~ 16 Gauge (1937)
Description: This highly sought after double is a Winchester Model 21 chambered in 16 Gauge (1937). The Winchester 21 owes its fame to a number of manufacturing techniques and design features that had never before been incorporated in a side-by-side shotgun. The action brakes open at an unusually shallow angle, to reduce ejecting and reloading time. Moreover, the Model 21 ignored traditional shotgun manufacturing techniques by foregoing the standard practice of brazing the twin barrels together, a process that often weakened the steel. Instead, the right and left tubes were each forged with an integral chopper lump lug, which, in turn, was cut with a dovetail that locked into the corresponding dovetail of the matching barrel and then soldered. This gives incredible strength to these dovetailed barrels. To give additional strength to this already muscular design, the receiver and barrels were forged of Winchester's proprietary chrome molybdenum "Proof Steel," which was developed especially for the Model 21. Wood is solid with crisp checkering, a few minor handling marks, and retains most of its fine hand rubbed oil finish. The fore end has similarly crisp checkering, a couple minor handling marks, and virtually all of its fine hand rubbed oil finish. Mechanics are crisp with strong ejectors, non-automatic safety, and bright shiny bores. Metal finishes on a Model 21 are unusual in that they have salt blue frames and rust blue barrels - this explains the difference in coloration between these metal surfaces. This shotgun has a Simmons vent rib. This Model 21 is in remarkably good condition furniture and metal, considering its age. 16 Gauge SOLD Chambers: 2¾ inch chambers Metal Condition: "Most of the original bluing is intact, with one scuff mark at muzzle and one midway on left barrel (see photos) Wood Condition: Excellent condition with some observable handling wear to left side of stock Bore Condition: Bore is bright and shiny Barrels: 26 inch barrel Triggers: Inertia-driven single selective trigger prevents doubling and enables the shooter to choose either right or left barrel by pushing the button to the right or left.
