Winchester manufactured the Model 37 shotgun from 1936 until 1963. None of the Model 37 shotguns were marked with a serial number, nor was one required. This lack of a serial number does make it more challenging to provide an accurate date of manufacture.
Ours is a 410 gauge model with a 26 inch barrel and 3 inch chamber. All of the model 37s were made with a full choke except for a few special order models. This one has the standard Full choke. Early model shotguns (1936-1948) were known as “red letter" models as the Winchester name was stamped on the underside of the receiver and the letters were filled with red enamel paint. This process continued until 1948. The Model 37 that we have for sale is one of the “red letter" models. Since production of the 410 Bore guns started in 1937, that would date this shotgun sometime between 1937 and 1948.
A single bead sight sits at the end of the barrel. The lockup of the action is tight. The hammer is somewhat stiff to cock but not unduly so. The metal finish on the receiver and barrel is almost entirely intact except for a few small spots at the muzzle end of the barrel. We’ve included a photo of that section. The bore is clean and the barrel is very bright. The wood is in Excellent condition, especially considering the age of the shotgun. The black buttstock has the Winchester Repeating Arms name in non-script and is in Very Good condition.
Overall, this is an incredibly well preserved early model 1937. If you’re a fan of vintage Winchester shotguns, we think that it would be tough to find one in better condition than this one. Take a good look at all of the photos and see if you agree.
