1891 Antique WINCHESTER M1887 Lever Action SHOTGUN
Popular 10 Gauge Coach and Law Enforcement Gun
Description: 1891 Antique WINCHESTER M1887 Lever Action SHOTGUN Popular 10 Gauge Coach and Law Enforcement Gun Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1887 Lever Action Shotgun, made in 1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. This model saw just under 65,000 made. The Model 1887 is considered the first successful repeating shotgun. Its lever-action design was chosen at the behest of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, best known at the time as manufacturers of their lever-action rifles. Designer John Moses Browning suggested that a pump-action would be much more appropriate for a repeating shotgun, but Winchester management's position was that, at the time, the company was known as a "lever-action firearm company” and felt that their new shotgun must also be a lever-action for reasons of brand recognition. Browning responded by designing a breech-loading, rolling block lever-action. To Winchester's credit, however, they later introduced a Browning designed pump-action shotgun known as the Model 1893 (an early production version of the model 1897) after the introduction of smokeless powder. Unfortunately, these Model 1887s were fast eclipsed by pump action shotguns. They came in both 10 and 12 gauges, and full lengths of 30-32 inch barrels and “riot” length of 20 inches. The riot length version is considerably scarcer. As one can imagine, these higher capacity shotguns, especially those either made shorter at the factory or cut down, made great companions for those on guard duty, riding shotgun on a coach, and for law enforcement. Perhaps other, more nefarious characters also found them useful. The overall condition is good. The barrel’s exterior has been buffed. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and bright. The walnut stock shows a good amount of use and it remains solid. The front sight bead is absent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel: 32 inches. Caliber: 10 gauge Chamber: 3 inches. LOP: 13 inches Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
