Description: Early WINCHESTER M37 Single Shot 16 Gauge TOP BREAK RED LETTER Shotgun C&R HAMMER Shotgun with AUTOMATIC SHELL EJECTOR Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 37 “Red Letter” Top Break Single Shot Shotgun, manufactured between 1939 and 1948 with a production run between 1939 and 1963. The Winchester Model 37 Single Shot Shotgun is an American shotgun manufactured in New Haven, Connecticut. It was in production from 1936 to 1963, with 1,015,554 examples manufactured. This model was manufactured by Winchester with a standard visible hammer action. The Winchester Model 37 uses a top-cocking lever and a breakdown type of action with an automatic shell ejector. The first Model 37 shotguns were delivered on February 10, 1936, according to factory records and none of the shotguns were serial numbered. The Model 37 came in two styles, those being the “Standard” and “Boy's Model”, which was introduced in 1958. Modified choke or cylinder bore was furnished at no extra charge on special order only. Chambering in the Model 37 was available in 410, 12, 16, 20, and 28 gauge. Early Winchester models referred to as "Red Letter" shotguns were stamped with the Winchester name and filled with red custom enamel paint until 1948. As mentioned above, the Model 37's were manufactured without date stamps or serial numbers. There are no factory records for the yearly number of shotguns produced during its entire production run. Interestingly, during World War II, the U.S. National Guard used Winchester Model 37 12-gauge shotguns. The overall condition is near fine. Traces of original blue finish. The stock and forend are in good shape with little handling wear and a thin grain split on the left wrist. Strong action. Mirror bright bore. Legible markings. Own the original!
