Most of his work was etched, some as this example , were stamped in two lines, W. J. McElroy Georgia. This example is stamped on the tang or ricasso. Length 19 1/4", Blade 14". C. S. Orndnance Officer {DeBow) of March 29, 1862 stated that McElroy was turning out 20 infantry swords, 20 naval cutlasses, 2o sergeants swords and 20 Bowie knives per week. By late 1863, early 1864, rescources, labor and the demands on the men and machines were taking a toll on the South.
