"Magnificent Cased Set of Flintlock Pistols by Boutet Presented from Napoleon (AH9043)
Description: "Made circa 1805-1807. 57 caliber with 10.5" barrels. This is a magnificent pair of Flintlock Pistols by the finest French gunsmith Nicholas Noel Boutet. These guns are in near mint condition. The barrels each have micro rifling. Each barrel has all of the blue on the pounce ground polish metal. And each barrel is decorated with approximately 235 gold stars that appear to have been overlaid on the barrels. The rear of the barrel has maker sinks that read “Boutet" and is gold plated with all of the gold finish. The locks are polished steel beautifully engraved with a Griffin below the pan. Below the frizzen spring is the word “Versailles" The wood is in near new condition with flat checkering on the grip. The mounts are intricate solid silver of the highest quality. This set comes in their original case with all of the original accessories. It is truly its own little time capsule. The box is very good with extremely light handling wear. These guns were presented from Napoleon Bonaparte to General Pedro Caro Sureda, the 3rd Marquis de Romana. The General was sent to Germany to help Napoleon’s forces. By 1808, Napoleon had dethroned King Charles IV and replaced him with his brother Joseph Bonaparte as the new King of Spain. By 1809, General Sureda had been in contact with Admiral Richard Goodwin Keats and a plan was made to defect approximately 10,000 Spanish soldiers which would severely weaken Napoleon’s army. When the time came, approximately 9,000 soldiers defected using seized Danish vessels. These pistols were given to Keats by the Marquis de Romana where he said to Admiral Keats “I received these weapons from my greatest enemy, I now give them to my greatest and best friend."
