Serial Number 56, Antique Colt “Pinched Frame" U.S. Artillery Model Single Action Army Revolver
Description:
An unparalleled opportunity for advanced collectors, this exceptionally rare Colt “Pinched Frame” Single Action Army revolver was manufactured in 1873, one of likely 100 or fewer ever made with this highly coveted early frame design. The “pinched frame” rear sight, a remarkable feature found on only about half of SAA revolvers below serial number 200, is virtually never encountered today, making surviving examples a true rarity in any condition. This iconic revolver, serial number 56, also boasts a fascinating service history, having originally seen prolonged U.S. military use before being arsenal refurbished in the 1890s into the Artillery Model configuration, complete with a desirable 5 1/2-inch barrel and the inspection initials “R.A.C” of famed U.S. Ordnance Sub-Inspector Rinaldo A. Carr. The revolver’s striking full blue finish and characteristic details indicate it was later overhauled at the historic Manila Ordnance Depot circa 1901, a notable stop in the storied journey of these legendary sidearms. This piece is fully documented as one of an exceedingly small handful of pinched frame SAAs known to exist, with serial number recognition and listing by renowned Colt historians. Graced with a “bullseye” ejector, blade front sight, correct later type barrel address, two-line patent dates, “45 CAL” marking on the trigger guard, varnished one-piece walnut grip with “R.A.C.” inspector mark, and authentic period-carved “C.L.B.” initials, this revolver exudes historic character. The frame is properly stamped with the rare two-digit serial number “56,” with other numbers reflecting the mixed-component tradition of U.S. Artillery Models. For collectors of Colts, early American arms, or museum-class rarities, this revolver is the epitome of desirability, a cornerstone investment representing not just the ultimate in Single Action Army collectibility, but also a direct link to the birth and history of America’s most legendary handgun.
Condition
Good as an extremely early production “pinched frame” Artillery Model Single Action Army revolver, retains 80% blue finish concentrated on the frame, with traces of blue finish in protected areas and mostly brown patina, with areas of pitting characteristic of exposure to a jungle environment. Grip is very good, with some dents and scratches, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent. Early production “Pinched Frame” Colt Single Action Army revolvers seldom turn up in any form today, making this a rare opportunity to acquire this historic U.S. Artillery Model example!
