This pistol is serial number 166 of the original 288 manufactured for U.S. military trials. The 1907 Trials, initiated by Brigadier General Crozier, sought a replacement for the Colt 1894 .38 revolvers after their shortcomings were revealed during the Philippine Insurrection. Savage 1907 pistols were issued to the 3rd, 6th, and 11th Cavalry for field testing and evaluation. After trials, the pistols were returned to Savage, factory refinished, and sold commercially through Tryon of Philadelphia.
