Johnson was awarded a contract, calling for the delivery of 10,000 pistols between 1853-1855. The single-shot pistol, with a brass front sight, mounted on an 8.5 inch barrel having an attached, rotating ramrod, is chambered in .54 caliber (54/100ths of an inch), firing a round lead ball. The sideplate is marked US/I.N. Johnson, with the left side marked U.S./S.K./P, the latter two strikes reflecting inspector markings.
