Description:
Gorgeous, nearly new, early S&W Model 52-1 semi-automatic target pistol manufactured 1963-1970 in .38 Special WC, SN: 55088, with long extractor, 5" barrel, patridge front sight and fully adjustable rear sight. Left side of slide marked "SMITH & WESSON" followed by usual four-line address block "MADE IN U.S.A." and "SPRINGFIELD, MASS" along with patent information. Left side of frame marked "SMITH & WESSON" above SN: "55088" / "MODEL 52-1". Exposed chamber marked "38 SPECIAL / MID - RANGE". Right side of slide: "PAT'S PENDING", the S&W logo on adjacent frame. Smooth walnut grips with silvered S&W medallions, each panel secured with two screws. 5 round single stack magazine with large window cartridge indicator. Complete with factory marked counterweight. The Model 52 was developed by Smith & Wesson for Bullseye shooting and was one of the first semiautomatic pistols chambered in .38 Special with flush-seated, full wadcutter bullets, the rimmed cartridge shape limiting the magazine capacity to five rounds. A wonderful, largely hand built pistol with a bank vault lock-up!
Condition:
Impressive 99.9% bright original factory blue with only the most minute box wear at the right side of the muzzle, no thinning or sharp edge wear on either the front or back strap. Upper portion of counterweight with a few tiny dings at lower leading edge. Right grip with an isolated, superficial handling mark. Magazine as new with no rub marks/insertional wear. Mirror bore, correct manual mechanics. A wonderful example of an early S&W 52-1 target pistol with unusual smooth grips, previously part of the well-known Peter DeRose Collection.
