Starting out as a Smith & Wesson Chiefs special or Chiefs Airweight, it was introduced in 1950 and was soon redesigned into the Bodyguard airweight which was an aluminum small J-frame revolver with a shrouded hammer. The Model 49 was the all-carbon-steel-framed version of those predecessor revolvers, featuring a 5-shot cylinder, 1 7/8" barrel, and a weight of 20 ounces.
