Civil War era Smith Carbine, manufactured by American Machine Works and distributed by Poultney & Trimble.

The Smith Carbine was a .50 caliber percussion breech-loading cavalry arm patented by Gilbert Smith and widely issued to Union cavalry units during the American Civil War. Approximately 30,000 examples were produced for U.S. military service and they remain one of the most recognizable cavalry carbines of the period.

This example remains in correct military configuration and retains several desirable collector features.

Receiver is marked:
“MANUFACTURED BY AMN MCH WKS SPRINGFIELD MASS”
“ADDRESS POULTNEY & TRIMBLE BALTIMORE U.S.A.”

The barrel bears a clear “L.F.R.” inspector stamp and the stock retains a visible “J.H.” oval cartouche, confirming U.S. military acceptance during the Civil War.

Historical Notes:

Smith carbines were issued to numerous Union cavalry units including the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, 7th Illinois Cavalry, and 3rd West Virginia Cavalry, among others. The innovative break-action design used rubber cartridges to seal the breech and was considered one of the stronger and more reliable cavalry carbines of the war.
