Description:

The Smith & Wesson Model 624 is a stainless steel, 44 Special caliber, 6-shot revolver built on the large N-frame, produced briefly between 1985 and 1988.  Often referred to as the stainless version of the Model 24 or the "Model of 1985 .44 Target Stainless," it is known for its excellent balance, accuracy, and smooth action. It was a limited run, with only a small number manufactured during that period, making it a rare find for collectors today.  This revolver  offers a compelling package for target shooting and casual plinking. Its accuracy is noteworthy, benefiting from a well-balanced design and a crisp, consistent trigger pull that aids in precise shot placement. The ergonomics are solid, with a grip that accommodates a variety of hand sizes, promoting comfort during extended sessions. Reliability is a strong suit, as the mechanism functions smoothly under regular use with proper care.  Overall, it’s a capable firearm for dedicated enthusiasts.  Other than the limited run of the Model 624, a factory recall of the guns produced in early 1985 (first year of production) has also enhanced the collectibility of this model.  Supposedly, in mid-1985, the supplier of the stainless steel used in the cylinders, notified S&W that some of the steel wasn't tempered properly. This only affected about 500 guns but all 1985 guns were to be returned to S&W and the cylinders changed out with the boxes then marked with a red "C", and the rear face of the cylinder stamped with an "F".  This particular gun was manufactured in early 1985, and comes with the "C" stamped box and "F" stamped cylinder (and a typed notice from S&W indicating that the gun has been returned for inspection).  Interestingly, Roy Jinks, a famous S&W employee and historian, who was involved with the Model 624 production, later claimed (in 2008):  "The cylinder problem was the fact that some cylinders had long charge holes and you could chamber the .44 Magnum round in the cylinder...Believe what you want to, but it was my project and I certainly do not remember a problem with the stainless steel for the cylinders."  So, the recall was real but the reasoh behind it may be in question (Was S&W trying to lay blaime for the recall on a subcontractor when in fact, the factory had erred in cutting the cylinder chambers?).
This Model 624 comes with target hammer and trigger, a desirable 4" tapered barrel, adjustable rear sights, and beautiful factory Goncalo Alves wood grips.  The gun may have been shot, but it is difficult to determine.  There is a very light spin ring on the cylinder.  It is in Excellent Condition inside and out. The gun comes in it's original factory box and wrapping, along with all paperwork and accessories as received from Smith & Wesson.  A great opportunity to own a beautiful example of this hghly collectible model.
