Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Evans New Model Rifle produced by the Evans Repeating Rifle Company of Mechanics Falls, Maine. Frequently referred to as “one of the most novel repeating rifles of the 19th century”, this .44 caliber centerfire carbine was manufactured between 1877 and 1879. Over the lifespan of the company between 1873 and 1879 there were under 15,000 total rifles made in all models with approximately 3000 of the “Sporting” models produced before the company went out of business in 1879, making this configuration fairly rare in comparison to the other models that preceded it.
This long gun was designed and patented in 1868 by Warren R. Evans, a dentist by trade, along with his brother George. After designing his weapon, Evans set up the Evans Repeating Rifle Company for the sole purpose of manufacturing this particular firearm in 1873 and set about marketing his weapon to the U.S. Army as he thought they would be interested in using a weapon of that type.
