Description: c1850s GERMANIC MILITIA Inline Rifle-Musket by J.H. DAMM of ELBERFELD Marked “J. H. DAMM in ELBERFELD” Here we present an Antique German Militia Rifle-Musket, made sometime in the mid-19th Century by J.H. Damm in Elberfeld, Prussia. Damm was a gunmaker who is listed in the Allgemeinesan für Handel und Gewerbe und damit verwandte from 1 August 1838. His son and perhaps his grandsons kept the family business going through about the beginning of the 20th Century. Though any of their firearms are a rare find today, Gebruder Damm or “brothers Damm” marked shotguns seem most prevalent. This piece here is a center hammer muzzle loading rifle with a bayonet lug that would have been used for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead and the homeland. It features a full-length stock though it is really quite light and handy compared to many of its American contemporaries. This is a very Germanic looking piece that is unique in its simplicity and practicality. The overall condition is near fine. The bore is sharply rifled and in fantastic shape.
