Field's Patent Falling Block Rifle by Scholefield, Beautiful Colors and Engraving, 450 3 1/4
Description: SOLD Here is a beautiful Field's Patent falling block rifle in .450 3 1/4" BPE. It was built by Scholefield, Goodman & Sons circa 1880 on an action provided by William Field. The action is marked with his patent number (1927) of May 17, 1877. Field produced about 2500 actions in all (according to Jonathan Kirton in The British Falling Block Rifle From 1865.) Scholefield was one of several makers who built their own rifles on the sought-after actions. Others included Purdey, Holland & Holland, W. W. Greener, W. & C. Scott and James MacNaughton & Son. This example has a 28" barrel with very good bore. The rib is engraved: SCHOLEFIELD. LONDON & BIRMINGHAM. The rear sights consist of one standing and two folding leaves with platinum sight lines, marked 100/200/300. The receiver features beautifully rendered engraving of, on the one side, a Cape buffalo, and, on the other, a pair of lions. The rifle has traditional British sling eyes. The length of pull is 14 1/8" over a smooth steel butt-plate. The weight is just a hair under 7 lbs. The previous owner informs me the rifle spent its early years in South Africa before being brought to Alaska, where it was used by a fishing boat captain to (illegally) shoot walrus. He (the previous owner) sent the rifle to Paul Fuchs: the well known Purdey-trained gunsmith. After a thorough strip-and-clean, Fuchs shipped the rifle to England to have the engraving touched up, and for case coloring. The result is a very fine, rare, and quite practical rifle for the collector or hunter. 20 rounds of primed virgin brass from Rocky Mountain Cartridge Company will be included with the rifle.
