Frontier Issued SHARPS M1874 Heavy Barrel BUFFALO Rifle DOUBLE SET TRIGGERS 1 of 6500 SPORTING Single Shot Models Manufactured
Description: Frontier Issued SHARPS M1874 Heavy Barrel BUFFALO Rifle DOUBLE SET TRIGGERS 1 of 6500 SPORTING Single Shot Models Manufactured Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Frontier Issued Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Model Heavy Barrel Single Shot “Buffalo Rifle” made circa 1877 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. During the 1870s through the 1880s, widespread slaughter of the American buffalo decimated the herds to near extinction. The professional hunters used powerful single shot breech-loading rifles to do their business. One of the most legendary rifle used on the buffalo ranges was the legendary Sharps Model 1874. The Model 1874 Sporting Rifle was made in greatest numbers by Sharps, even though the number of rifles made probably doesn't exceed 6500. The amount tells something about the decline in the number of Sharps rifles made after the war. As a comparison, over 100 000 percussion Sharps rifles and carbines were made, many of which were converted to metallic cartridge after the war. All of the Model 1874 Sharps were chambered for .40, 44, 45 and 50 calibers, but the chamber lengths varied. The .40 caliber rifles could be chambered for both bottleneck and straight cases. In the early years, .44-77 was the most common chambering. In 1876 the factory changed location from Hartford, Connecticut to Bridgeport in the same state. In the Bridgeport era most rifles were chambered in .45-70, making this example more scarce. Many enthusiasts of the Sharps buffalo gun will tell you that while the Winchester rifle has been credited with winning the “Wild West”, it was really the Sharps that made things safe enough for the Winchester to do so. Buffalo could be killed from great distances without the buffalo being able to detect the smell or physical presence of the shooter which could have led to a stampede. This allowed the buffalo to be dropped, one after another, allowing single parties to take hundreds of buffalo in a day which led the buffalo to the brink of extinction. The overall condition is very good. Original dark patina. The stock and forend are original with a split on the right side of the forend and expected handling wear throughout. Patent markings on the left side are legible. The action is excellent. The bore is bright and has sharp rifling. “Old Reliable” and the Sharps Bridgeport address is on top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight, with “40 Calibre” and “2 5/8” on top of the breech.
