A best-quality double rifle has a presence that is difficult to overstate. The weight, balance, engraving, stocking, sight picture, and mechanical confidence all must come together in one purposeful sporting arm. This Auguste Francotte sidelock ejector double rifle does exactly that. Built in the late 1950s and chambered in the elegant .300 H&H Flanged Magnum, serial number 90213 represents the kind of refined Continental gunmaking that appeals equally to the collector, the double-rifle enthusiast, and the hunter who appreciates a rifle meant to be carried, shot, and admired.
Francotte was one of Belgium’s great gunmakers, known for producing fine sporting arms to individual order rather than in ordinary production-line form. The action follows the Holland & Holland sidelock pattern and is strengthened with features associated with serious best-quality rifle construction: a reinforced action, intercepting sears, bushed firing pins, a concealed third fastener, gold-line cocking indicators, and an extended top and bottom tang. These details were not added for decoration, they speak to strength, reliability, longevity, and the careful engineering expected in a high-grade double rifle.
The choice of caliber is a major part of this rifle’s appeal. The .300 H&H Flanged Magnum offers the romance of a classic British sporting cartridge in a form properly suited to a double rifle. It is not simply a curiosity or a rifle that will spend its life in a display case; it is a usable flanged magnum: flat-shooting, elegant, and entirely appropriate for the hunter who wants the quick handling and the instant second shot of a double rifle without stepping into the recoil and specialization of the heavy Nitro Express cartridges.
The 24 3/4” chopper-lump barrels retain 99% factory blue, with mirror bores and sharp rifling. The hand-filed quarter rib carries one standing and one folding express sight, giving the rifle a clean, sight picture. At 8 lbs. 12 oz., the rifle has enough substance to feel steady and controlled, yet it remains lively in the hands. It comes to the shoulder naturally, with the kind of balance and pointability that remind you this was made as a hunting rifle, not merely a showpiece.
The frame and sidelocks are beautifully engraved by R. Smeets with fine scroll and game-scene work. The engraving remains sharp, and the receiver retains 99% factory case color, vivid and rich throughout. The double triggers are crisp, with an articulated front trigger, and the ejectors are timed, the screws excellent, the action is tight and centered.
The stock is equally impressive. The highly figured walnut is shaped with a capped pistol grip, beaded pancake cheekpiece with shadow line, teardrops, and a splinter forend with Anson pushbutton release. The point-pattern checkering with double border remains in excellent condition. The extended bottom tang reaches the engraved steel trapdoor grip cap, while the leather-covered pad completes the rifle with a proper traditional finish. Length of pull is 14 3/8” to the pad, with 13 11/16” to the end of wood, 1 5/8” drop at comb, 2 3/4” drop at heel, and 1/2” cast off.
This is a rifle that rewards close inspection, from the action work and engraving to the stocking, case color, barrel finish, and overall preservation. For the collector, this is a near-new example of high-grade Belgian gunmaking in a highly desirable sidelock configuration. For the hunter or double rifle enthusiast, it is a practical and elegant rifle in a cartridge that can genuinely be enjoyed.
This is a remarkable Francotte and a truly distinguished sporting rifle, it is presented in a Brady-type leather-trimmed canvas trunk case with snap caps and oil bottle. Please review the detailed photographs and specifications below. Thanks for looking!
