Description: #1157, Niedner Rifle Corporation, Dowagiac, Mich.: A Kurz (K) Short Action Round Top Commercial Mauser Action Custom by Niedner in a 250-3000 that is Engraved by Rudolph J. Kornbrath and stocked by Tom Shelhamer and most likely made in 1934, The barrel is numbered 1157 and stamped "CB" which was Carlyn W. Behrman and he was one of the best barrel makers of his time and was employed full time by Niedner, The Kurz Mauser is #110991 and was built by Mauser in 1931; The receiver, magazine box, bolt and trigger all have matching serial numbers, 24" barrel with a stippled band front ramp surrounded by engraving, Sight protector, Dovetail scope blocks on the barrel that are for Unertl scope bases, Lyman 48 receiver sight, Hinged floorplate with a center bow release, 2 panel bolt knob checkering, Checkered trigger face; Kornbrath complete game scene coverage on the floorplate and trigger guard, Mountain sheep on the receiver ring, Engraved at the front ramp, Barrel band engraved, The sling eyes engraved and total engraving on the grip cap with a Grizzley, This is classic Kornbrath engraving, Very nice French Walnut wood with excellent color and contrast that most likely came from Mitchell Bosly in Birmingham, England, Classic style stock by Thomas Shelhamer (Simple Elegance) and signed inside the inletting (He got about $50 to stock it), The internal inletting is absolutely done with excellent cuts and finished as well as the outside, A double bead carved cheekpiece, Wrap around point pattern checkering, Ebony forend tip, Engraved sling eyes on the stock, The forward sling eye is a barrel tiedown to the engraved barrel band, 13 11/16" LOP over a trapdoor buttplate that is cut inside for a sectioned cleaning rod, 7 lbs. 8 oz., This early American classic is original and remains in excellent condition, The blue is 98-99%, The stock is 98%, The checkering is 99%, The bore appears like new. This is another exceptional 1930's Classic American custom-built rifle with the touch of Kornbrath, Shelhamer and Niedner all on a Kurz commercial Mauser. The style, workmanship, artistry, and full attention to detail is all in place. Adolph Otto Niedner was born in Philadelphia in 1864 and passed away December 26, 1954. From an early age Niedner was a rifleman and constantly sought out accuracy. At the turn of the century, he was one of the best offhand shots in the U.S. The Niedner Rifle Corp. started life in Dowagiac in 1920 with a new building and a 200-yard range. In 1924 Niedner hired Thomas Shelhamer as their stockmaker, and he remained there until just after WWII. After Niedner Corp. closed Shelhamer went on his own and he was recognized as one of the best stockmakers in the U.S. He passed away May 6, 1971.
