EXC. UNALTERED AND IDENTIFIED R. F. SEDGLEY, PHILA., PA, '03 SPRINGFIELD .30-06 SPORTER
Description: EXCELLENT, UNALTERED AND IDENTIFIED R. F. SEDGLEY, PHILADELPHIA, PA MADE 1903 SPRINGFIELD .30-06 SPORTER. These were some of the first high power bolt action commercial sporting rifles made in the U.S. Savage had the first with their M-1920 in .250-3000, but if you wanted something bigger it was either R. F. Sedgley or Griffin & Howe. Sedgley made high quality bolt rifles from the 1920s through the 1930s. Most were made using surplus ‘03 Springfield actions that the company re-heat treated and proof tested. This example was their standard model with Lyman receiver sight, 24" barrel with no provision for rear barrel sight or dovetail and ramped/hooded front sight. Most, like this one, have checkered steel butt plates, schnable forend tips, checkered pistol grip and forend and barrel band sling swivels. Interestingly, the floor plate is professionally block letter engraved “ALFRED T. KINGSBAKER.” A quick Google search turned up some interesting info on Alfred. Seems he was a wealthy individual in Los Angeles, California involved in the produce business. A photo of his mansion can be found online (amazing place!). Overall excellent condition with only very minor handling marks. Doesn’t appear this one saw much use and certainly no abuse. Tight action, unaltered and bright minty bore. Has the standard R. F. Sedgley markings on the barrel along with the “S” proof test marking. An interesting classic rifle whose original owner deserves to be researched more.
