This Springfield has the 1891 date on the stock. The musket's serial number is 524489. It is chambered for the 45-70 Government Musket cartridge. The bore is bright and sharp. The government proof and ordnance stamps are sharp and easy to read. The original rod bayonet is in fine condition.The color cased finish is lightly faded but still shows good color and figuring. The action works properly with no issues. The sights are correct and original to this musket. The front sight hood is also intact. The trap door compartment in the butt stock has the original tools in the compartment. The tools consist of the following, The Wiping Tip, Model 1882 Headless Shell Extractor and the Model 1879 Combination Tool. The original arsenal bluing would rate a 96% overall condition. The stock has no cracks or splits. There is some light service wear, The stock varnish is intact. This musket is in its original as issued condition. These Rod Bayonet Muskets are not commonly seen. It was another attempt by the government arsenal to improve the serviceability of the Trapdoor series of firearms then in service.
