Built on the proven Mauser 98 system, the Modelo 1912/61 utilizes a controlled-round-feed turn-bolt action with dual front locking lugs, a full-length claw extractor, and a five-round internal magazine loaded via standard stripper clips. Its 23.50-inch military-profile barrel is paired with an adjustable tangent rear sight and protected front post, delivering the rugged reliability, smooth operation, and battlefield accuracy that established the Mauser as the world's benchmark for military bolt-action service rifles.

Chile adopted the Steyr Model 1912 prior to the First World War, with rifles produced in Austria to exceptionally high commercial standards.
