The 1886 was a collaboration between John Moses Browning and his brother, Matthew Sandifer Browning, to build a big game rifle to replace the Model 1876. This was Browning’s first repeating rifle design adopted by Winchester, and the design even gained the endorsement of Theodore Roosevelt, formerly a staunch proselyte of the 1876. This Winchester Model 1886 Rifle is marked by the 19th Century sporting goods retailer Vincent Kindler of Saginaw, Michigan. Kindler was an immigrant from Baden, Prussia in the mid-1800s. He set up shop in 1867 as a gun dealer and gunsmith. The rear of the barrel is marked “KINDLER” and “SAGINAW”.
