Winchester Model 1873 (Third Model) .38 W.C.F.
Description: This 1889 vintage Model 1873 rifle might have belonged to several generations of a familiy judging by the initials on the elevator, but the "W" engraved on the dust cover is of recent vintage as evidenced by the lack of oxidation. A curious feature is that while the "patina" and "case colors" on the receiver appear to be strong, the underlying metal surface carries a significant amount of freckling/pitting that seems to be inconsistent with the quality of the finish. The photo of the left side of the receiver illustrates this phenomenon quite well. SOLD Manufacturer: 1889 Caliber Info: .38-40 Winchester Center Fire Metal Condition: Finish on receiver and barrel is a mixture of blue with a generous amount of patina. Sideplates reain vestiges of case coloring. Dustcover has what appears to be a "W" partially engraved (recently) on it and the elevator has the initials of several ind Wood Condition: Wood has been sanded and refinished. Some deeper sanding marks can be observed in the photos. Bore Condition: Bore reflects light well, but has a frosted appearance and exhibits light to moderate pitting. Possibly polished to enhance appearance. Barrels: 24" Octagonal Stock: Straight, smooth walnut Stock Dimensions: LOP: 12-5/8 Fore End: Smooth walnut with metal cap Butt Pad: Curved steel buttplate Weight: 8-1/2 lbs. Sights: Blade front, semi-buckhorn rear Extras: None. Item Location: East Hartford, CT |
