Here is a fine early back-action Boss hammergun, completed on September 15, 1862. The 28 3/4" black powder proved Damascus barrels have 2 1/2" chambers and excellent bores, with true cylinder choke in each. The concave rib is engraved: BOSS & CO. 75 St. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON. The gun locks up tight with its Jones under-lever. The action and locks have excellent bold foliate engraving. The hammers are rebounding, and the locks function crisply. The keyed fore-end has a horn finial. The figured stock measures 1 1/2" x 2 5/8" x 14 5/8" over a smooth steel butt-plate. There is slight cast off. There are some indentations to the fore-end wood (see photo #9) and light scratches to the stock, but the wood is otherwise in very good condition with no chips or cracks. The weight is 7 lbs 2 oz. A beautiful hammergun from a great maker.
