JAMES PURDEY & SONS BEAUTIFUL 28 GAUGE SINGLE BARREL HAMMERGUN
Description: Here is a rare and excellent single barrel top-lever 28 bore hammergun by J. Purdey & Sons, built circa early 1880s. This fine weapon was likely built as a rook rifle, then converted to a .410, then ultimately to 28 gauge. The nitro proved barrel is 28” with a 2 ½” chamber and excellent bore, choked .012 (about modified.) The octagon-to-round barrel is engraved: J. P. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY ST. LONDON. The gun locks up tight, and the rebounding lock functions crisply. The receiver and peninsula lock plate feature simple scroll engraving. The pull-off fore-end has a horn tip. The lightly figured pistol-grip stock measures 1 7/8” x 2 ½” x 14 1/8” with slight cast on. The weight is 4 lbs 14 oz. A wonderful little Purdey.
