Lefever "A" Grade 16 ga. Shotgun
Description: The shotgun is Rock Solid "Tight on Face." Even with the forearm off the gun, when the barrels are closed in the action it is as tight as a Bank Vault. This indicates to me that the gun was not fired very much in it's lifetime. Essentially, the gun is about new mechanically. Also, he asked about the bores. They are clear and shiny. My friend's camera utilizes three lenses, and it is really hard to get an accurate picture of them becuause the lenses want to shift back and forth when the camera even moves a tiny bit. But, again, the bores are shiny. Hope this helps. This is a very rare gun. To find a 16 gauge in a Lefever "A" grade with 26" barrels is very hard to do. Most of the guns were produced with 28" barrels. There is only one other Lefever "A" grade listed on this site. It is also a 16 gauge, but has 28" barrels. There were two other guns that sold, both were 12 gauges, and they were over $2000. The 16 gauge that is listed with the 28" barrels is $2350. This is a "STEAL" for the price if it is what you want. Many people are watching it. It won't be here very long. Good luck to you. For those who might be interested, I went back to the blocks of numbers for the Lefever "A' Grades, and put together yearly production totals for the guns. Please Note--the total numbers here ended up being a total of 2483 by number, slightly less than the number of guns (seemingly) produced (2496) from Numbers 300000 to 302496. There could be many things that account for this: damaged or unusable receivers, miscalcutation and/or misstamping of numbers, etc. This is the total for all Models (5 and 6). But, these figures are still mostly accurate: 1934 654 1935 352 1936 1063 1937 312 1938 72 1939 30 A gentleman contacted me this morning about where to get information on the Lefever "A" Grade Shotugns. I told him what sources I found helpful, and as far as the numbers for the various gauges was concerned, I said that I have studied these guns for a bit over ten years now, noting every one that came up for sale along the way. That's how a put together my "Sample Survey" of the various gauges. And, I told him about the Cody Museum having the serial numbers for when a specific gun was made, and where it was shioped. I actually do think (based on the guns that I have seen available) that there were more 20 gauge guns made than 16 gauge guns. It's hard to determine actual numbers when the sample size is relatively small, but with every gun that comes along you are one step closer toward getting a more accurate count of the total guns produced. I also mentioned that I have seen all kinds of different choke formations as well, from Cylinder to Full, including Ithaca's Skeet chokes. Hope this little bit of information helps. For sale is a Lefever "A" Grade Model 5 shotgun. These guns were produced from 1934 until 1939. They were made in 12, 16, and 20 gauge and in 410 bore. The total number of guns made was 2496. I have done a little research on these guns, and based on the guns that I have seen for sale over about the last ten years, I did a "Survey" of sorts and figured up the percentage of guns that were sold in all gauges/bores. I then calculated the number of guns that could have possibly have been produced. Here is my estimate for the 5 year production run: 12 gauge 950 16 gauge 650 20 gauge 650 410 bore 246 Needless to say, they are very scarce. The "A" grade was a "Deluxe" version of the Nitro Special. To be honest, I like them better than any other Ithaca shotgun. They were known for their craftsmanship and enhancements in design and materials. They employed a very nice checkering pattern, and the forearms had a small ebony wedge at the tip. The engraving was a simple line pattern with stippling on the top of the receiver. The overall look was clean, simple, and classic. The guns were built on a "Semi Custom" basis. Options were available. Stock dimensions (within reason) could include variations in the length of pull and drops. Walnut stocks included a better grade wood than the Nitro Specials. This particular gun, # 302093, was built (according to the Ihaca Serial Numbers) in the last week of 1936. The gun is completely original with 26" barrels, double triggers, brass front bead sight, and extractors. It has the factory 2 3/4" chambers. Picture # 6 shows a tiny mark and then a spot on the barrel where the bluing has rubbed off. I have not attempted to touch this up. Soemtimes, collectors don't want any touch-ups done to guns. I simply keep my guns wiped down with an oily silicone rag. The new owner can decide how to deal with it. The length of pull is 14 1/16 inches from the front trigger to the end of the butt plate. Drops are about 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 inches. The shotgun weighs 6 pounds, 8.5 ounces. The gun has chokes of about IC and Mod. Ithaca used numbers on the barrel flats of their guns, and this gun has a "4" on the one barrel, and the other barrel is blank. Often times a customer would send the gun back to Ithaca to have the chokes altered slightly. The gun is tight on face without the forearm attached, and the lever sits far to the right at the top, This gun was not used much at all. The bores are bright, but it was hard getting a picture of the insides down the length of the barrels. Overall, I see no cracks. The wood is in good shape, with small scratches and finish wear. The forearm has crazing and finish loss towards the front and the top of the sides. Often times, owners of guns would put them by the furnace during the winter months so as not to pick up moisture, and this could dry out the varnish on the gun's stock. Beyond a brief description, the pictures are the best indicator of the gun's condition. This would make just a wonderful upland game gun if you like 16 gauge guns. It's in a condition that will be transferred over to future generations, who most assurdly could enjoy it. Call or email if you have any questions. Shipping and insurance are extra, at whatever the cost is. To save on shipping the gun can be broken down so that it fits in a shorter box. I will send a copy of my driver's license with the gun.
